Cuthbert's Boatyard at what is now Barangaroo. The Observatory at top left, the National School at top centre (now the National Trust), and St Phillips at top right are all still there, but that very rocky cliff side was reformed around 1900, and the waterfront made into wharfage.

St John's church school, which was later demolished to make way for a service station. Hynde's windmill at rear, before Nimrod Street was put through, the mill demolished and its stone blocks reused to build Beare's Stairs in Caldwell Street behind it. And at the back of the mill is Craigend, the villa and huge garden of Thomas Mitchell, which are now blocks of flats from the 1920s.

Charles Syer went around town in the early 1880s with a hidden camera, taking candid snapshots of daily life. His collection is quite fabulous. I had a lot of fun bringing to life this one of the steam tram stop by the railway. On consideration, I think the large lady may well be with child rather than just big, which may have spurred the subject.

For a time in the Domain in the 1860s, a crane structure was erected for the construction of the Governor Bourke statue, from where this photo appears to have been taken. Looking south west, some of the sights are; at bottom right, The Girls' School of Industry, built 1826, demolished in 1879 for the Garden Palace. At centre is the Iron Church, built 1856, later converted to the Public Library, then disassembled and rebuilt elsewhere in 1911. Directly behind it is the spire of St James Church, and in the distant centre is St Andrews Cathedral under construction.

When the site of Town Hall was an old disused cemetery surrounded by a high stone wall, and St Andrew's Cathedral was under construction next door, this was the temporary St Andrew's. Made of weatherboard and corrugated iron, it jutted out into George St. I did this one at sunset to match the long shadows.

O'Brien's mausoleum, on the estate for the original family who owned Bondi. This was demolished in 1928, with reinterment at Waverley. In the background of the restored pic, the giant sand dune that covered most of the northern side of Bondi is visible. It took decades of sand mining to clear it for real estate.
